World Peace Party
64
This month I held a peace party at the library I work for. But, I think World Peace is a perfect theme for many parties. For example, if you have a little girl in pageants a world peace party would be great. Everyone knows that one of the things Miss America wishes for is world peace. If you have a student group that wants to make a difference in the world then a world peace party would be a good event for your members or for a fundraiser. There are three separate holidays in the year that celebrate peace: November 17th- World Peace Day, Peace Day September 21st, and the pope has decided that for the Catholic Church World Peace Day in 2012 is January 1st.
Food:
“A piece for peace” – piece of pie, piece of cake, piece of pizza, piece of candy
It would be a good idea to serve relaxing tea like chamomile. Maybe your party is for an activist group, so you might want to serve more thought provoking food like grass fed animals or no meat at all. Maybe serve fresh fruit and vegetables that are in season from the local farmers market? Be thought provoking but not radical, after all you want the party to be peaceful.
If it’s a private party and not a student party, you might want to serve wine.
Decorations:
You could hang Crane mobiles and Asian peace symbols. In Japan, a little girl got leukemia after being exposed to the atom bomb that was dropped in Hiroshima. She decided to fold a thousand origami cranes for peace. She folded less than 700 before she died but her classmates finished the rest. Leukemia was later found to be a side effect of radiation and there is now a statue in this little girls honor. Doves with olive branches are the international symbol for peace. Due to wedding, doves are easy to find everywhere. Olive branches might be harder to find but a nursery could help or you could get silk flowers. I live near an area where mistletoe grows wild. Mistletoe is also a symbol for peace. The Norse soldiers would lay down their swords when they came across a tree with mistletoe growing. Mistletoe represents the goddess Freya. You could do a 70s twist and hang smiley faces and peace symbols. A poster of the world with hands wrapped around it would be cool or a globe would make a nice centerpiece. The ideas are really endless here.
Activities:
For the event I hosted, the students and staff wore white ribbonsfor peace, Neutrality, forgiveness, and non-violence against women. We also passed around a resolution for peace for everyone to sign. One of the students here was really good at making the origami cranes so we gave the students an opportunity to fold the cranes and then have them sent to their local leaders. In addition to this, we tie dyed t-shirts with peace symbols. You coulld have mood music or hippies 70s tunes playing.
Another direction to take this same theme would be to make it more relaxing and peaceful and do yoga, make lavender soap. Like Ghandi said, “You must be the change you wish to make in the world.” If you want the world to be peaceful, you must first be peaceful. So just relax and resound yourself to make decisions that takes the world around you in a more peaceful direction.
Party Favors:
You can give your guest peace symbol jewelry. If you decide to tie dye shirts or make lavender soap, they can keep those. Why not give them a CD of the mood music or 70s music that you are playing at the party? You can pass out peace stone talismans. You could even have your guest make them. You could also give them crystals that symbolize peace like malachite or sodalite.
